At least 12 people were injured, including six children, after gunfire near Perry and Manatee streets in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday night, police said.

The Tallahassee Police Department said 11 of the injured people had gunshot wounds. Its preliminary account divided the 12 victims evenly between adults and juveniles.

Officers responded shortly before 8 p.m. October 24. Police said a physical confrontation preceded the shooting, but investigators were still working to establish the circumstances and identify those responsible.

In an update from an overnight news conference, WCTV reported that police chief Lawrence Revell said three victims had serious injuries, one was in critical condition and eight were stable. The broadcaster said the twelfth person was hurt while fleeing. Those details followed an earlier police release that described at least three serious injuries and nine people in stable condition.

The shooting occurred near Florida A&M University during its homecoming weekend. WCTV reported that the university issued an alert advising people to avoid the area or shelter nearby. The location and timing do not establish a connection between the shooting and the football game.

Police described the investigation as ongoing and their information as preliminary. WCTV reported that no arrests or person of interest had been announced at the overnight briefing.
