BEND, OREGON — Three children and a teacher were killed Thursday after a 16-year-old opened fire at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, according to police.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the victims were children aged five, eight and 11, along with a teacher. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police say the attacker forced entry

Police received the first emergency call at 12:59 p.m. local time on October 15. The initial report involved gunfire outside Silver Rail Elementary School. Additional callers then reported that a person had entered the building and begun shooting.

Police said the teenager gained entry by firing through locked doors. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. and reported moments later that the attacker had been shot and killed.

Community member intervened

Authorities said an armed community member followed the attacker into the school and confronted him. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek credited that intervention with stopping further loss of life.

Police had not publicly identified the victims or the attacker in the sources reviewed early Friday. Officials also had not released a motive. The circumstances of the intervention and the sequence of shots remain part of the investigation.

School community enters recovery

Bend-La Pine Schools established a family-reunification location after the attack. City and state officials said support would be provided to students, families and staff as investigators continued their work.

The shooting occurred in Bend, roughly 190 kilometres southeast of Portland. For Canadian readers, it is a major cross-border public-safety story involving elementary-school security, emergency response and firearm violence; the facts in this report are limited to the confirmed Oregon investigation.
