DENVER — William Nylander scored twice and added three assists as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Colorado Avalanche 6–3 at Ball Arena on Saturday night.

Nylander’s five points matched his single-game career high. His second goal was the 700th point of his NHL career and moved him past George Armstrong and Frank Mahovlich into seventh place on Toronto’s all-time goals list, according to the Maple Leafs’ official postgame notes.

Toronto responds after falling behind

Nick Blankenburg opened the scoring at 3:03 of the first period in his Maple Leafs debut. Nathan MacKinnon then scored twice to give Colorado a 2–1 lead before the first intermission.

Nylander tied the game on a power play early in the second period. Brock Nelson restored Colorado’s lead, but Nylander scored again at 16:47 before Easton Cowan put Toronto ahead 46 seconds later.

Auston Matthews added a power-play goal in the third period and scored into an empty net for the final margin. Matthews finished with two goals and two assists, while Nick Paul recorded two assists.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30 shots for his first victory as a Maple Leaf. Toronto improved to 3–2–1 and earned its first road win of the season, while Colorado fell to 3–2–0.

The Maple Leafs converted two of four power-play opportunities and killed all five Avalanche power plays. Colorado goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 17 saves.
