HAMILTON — Hundreds of health-care workers rallied outside Hamilton General Hospital on Tuesday against Hamilton Health Sciences’ plan to eliminate 413 positions while the hospital network addresses a projected $150-million deficit.

The rally was organized after HHS announced the reductions in September. CUPE Local 7800 says the affected positions include 143 nursing jobs and other front-line roles. Workers at Tuesday’s demonstration argued that fewer staff would increase workloads and worsen waits.

Workers warn of pressure on patient care

CHCH News reported that nurses and union leaders described existing burnout and crowded hospitals. CUPE Local 7800 president Jillian Watt said reducing staff would leave workers with less time for patients and could increase exhaustion and sick calls.

The union cited an average 24-hour wait for an admission bed at Hamilton General’s emergency department, compared with an Ontario target of eight hours. That figure is a union claim reported from the rally; it is not presented here as an independently audited current average.

HHS and Ontario say services will be protected

HHS has said rising costs and demand are exceeding available funding. Earlier reporting said roughly one-third of the 413 positions were already vacant, meaning the number of eliminated positions is not the same as the number of employees who will receive layoff notices.

The Ontario government told CHCH that the changes would not affect patient care or services and said hospitals are responsible for staffing decisions. Workers and their union dispute that assurance, arguing that removing front-line positions will inevitably affect care.

Watt said employees had not yet received layoff notices and that a meeting was scheduled for Friday. CUPE also plans a public town hall on November 10.

What happens next

The confirmed next steps are the Friday meeting and the later town hall. The rally does not itself reverse the plan, and neither HHS nor Ontario had announced new funding or a withdrawal of the reductions by Tuesday evening.
