MONTRÉAL — Macklin Celebrini scored his second goal of the game on a power play 2:13 into overtime, completing the San Jose Sharks’ comeback from a two-goal third-period deficit in a 4–3 victory over the Canadiens on Tuesday night.

Celebrini also had an assist. Michael Misa and Tyler Toffoli scored the third-period goals that brought San Jose level before the overtime winner at Bell Centre.

Montréal builds a 3–1 lead

Celebrini opened the scoring at 13:49 of the first period after intercepting a loose pass. Nick Suzuki tied the game less than three minutes later.

Juraj Slafkovsky put Montréal ahead early in the second period, and Cole Caufield extended the lead to 3–1 at 14:03. Suzuki, Slafkovsky and Caufield each finished with a goal and an assist.

Power plays turn the game

Misa cut the deficit to one at 5:36 of the third period after driving to the net for a Kiefer Sherwood feed. Toffoli tied it on a power play at 11:09, redirecting a Celebrini pass.

In overtime, Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobeš was called for interference at 1:53. Twenty seconds later, Celebrini one-timed Ivar Stenberg’s pass from the right face-off circle for the winner.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 31 saves for San Jose, which improved to 5–4–1 after ending a two-game skid. Dobeš stopped 26 shots for Montréal, which fell to 4–3–2.

A fourth overtime goal before age 21

The NHL’s official recap says Celebrini’s winner was the fourth overtime goal of his career. That tied Ilya Kovalchuk and Sean Monahan for the most by an NHL player aged 20 or younger.

The Canadiens received one point for the overtime loss but surrendered a two-goal lead in the third period. The result should not be read as a regulation defeat or as Montréal leaving the game without a standings point.
