MONTRÉAL — Cole Caufield settled a game that had slipped out of the Canadiens' control, scoring 54 seconds into overtime for a 4–3 victory over Buffalo at the Bell Centre on Saturday, October 17.
His second goal of the night came on a breakaway after the Sabres failed to convert a three-on-one opportunity at the other end. Montréal earned its third win in four games.
Buffalo comes back from two down
Josh Norris opened the scoring at 8:21 of the first period. Zachary Bolduc answered on a power play at 11:45, and Caufield put Montréal ahead at 14:01.
Alexandre Texier extended the lead to 3–1 at 7:39 of the second. Buffalo responded through Jack Quinn's shorthanded goal at 9:52, then tied the game when Tage Thompson scored 10:12 into the third.
Jacob Fowler made 23 saves for Montréal, while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 30 shots. Juraj Slafkovsky and Alexandre Carrier each contributed two assists for the Canadiens.
This was a separate meeting from Montréal's October 13 shootout victory over Buffalo; Saturday's result was decided during overtime.
