ONTARIO — Domestic projects are helping some Canadian steelmakers absorb the impact of U.S. tariffs, but the improvement is uneven, Reuters reported on Friday, October 16.
The report identifies mining, energy and data-centre construction as sources of demand, with much of the improvement concentrated in Western Canada.
Ontario manufacturing serving western customers
Tenaris provides a concrete example of that domestic supply chain. The company says it is now producing its TN 95EY steel grade at its Sault Ste. Marie Industrial Centre for demanding oil-and-gas applications, including high-pressure and high-temperature wells.
The company described the product in a September 30 website announcement and an October 13 news release. It identifies the Montney and Duvernay formations among the intended applications. Those statements describe an existing manufacturing development, not a new investment announced today.
Tenaris says introducing the grade required changes to manufacturing processes, testing and pipe tracking, involving its operations, metallurgy, technology and laboratory teams.
Different products, different markets
A stronger market for specialized energy-sector pipe does not establish that demand for every steel product has recovered. It also does not resolve the separate employment issues at Stelco, which TNC has covered previously.
The distinction matters for Hamilton readers: national diversification can create opportunities while individual plants and workers still face uncertainty. Company product announcements should not be read as a guarantee of new orders or jobs at another producer.
