TORONTO — Toronto FC scored twice in second-half stoppage time to defeat CF Montréal 2–1 at BMO Field on Saturday, completing a dramatic comeback in the latest 401 Derby.
Substitutes Lewis Morgan and Djordje Mihailovic supplied the goals only 116 seconds apart. The victory moved Toronto to 32 points and kept the club within reach of the Eastern Conference wild-card places with six regular-season matches remaining.
Montreal leads after the break
Toronto was forced to make an early change when starting goalkeeper Luka Gavran left with a leg injury in the 23rd minute. William Yarbrough replaced him and made his Toronto FC debut, keeping the match scoreless through halftime.
CF Montréal broke through in the 52nd minute. Yarbrough stopped Matty Longstaff's first effort, but Daniel Ríos converted the rebound to give the visitors a 1–0 lead.
Toronto head coach Robin Fraser introduced Mihailovic in the 61st minute and Morgan in the 82nd as the home side searched for a response. Mihailovic was returning from a hamstring injury and making his first club appearance since September 5.
Two goals change the match
Toronto equalized in the 93rd minute. Richie Laryea worked a short throw to Niklas Dorsch, whose first-time cross found Morgan for a controlled left-footed volley. It was Morgan's first goal since joining Toronto FC in September.
Two minutes later, Laryea sent Theo Corbeanu down the right side. Corbeanu delivered a low cross for Mihailovic, who swept the winner into the net in front of the south-end supporters.
The two goals extended Toronto's unbeaten run against Montréal to six MLS regular-season meetings. Toronto FC's official report lists four wins and two draws in that stretch, dating to May 2024.
Playoff race remains open
Canadian Press reported that the three points left Toronto one point behind the two clubs occupying the Eastern Conference wild-card positions at the end of Saturday's match. Toronto's 7-10-11 record reflects a difficult season, but the late comeback preserved a path into the post-season.
Toronto hosts Orlando City on Wednesday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern. CF Montréal, now 6-16-6, hosts Atlanta United the same evening.
