Good morning. I’m Lucy with The Northern Current for Tuesday, November third.
Ontario’s private-career-college oversight is facing new scrutiny. The province says thousands of student-aid applications were traced to a single internet address, and the government has paused student-aid payments to private postsecondary institutions while it investigates. Yesterday, the legislature rejected an opposition motion calling for a relief plan for affected students within fourteen days. Allegations of fraud have not been proven in court.
Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem appears before the House of Commons finance committee today, days after the bank raised its policy rate by a quarter point to two and a half per cent. The bank says inflation is expected to remain near three per cent through much of next year. Lawmakers are expected to press Macklem on the effect of higher borrowing costs.
In Hamilton, police have charged a twelve-year-old boy and a forty-eight-year-old woman after a fifty-nine-year-old man suffered life-altering injuries at Centre Mall. Police say the man was supervising air cadets selling poppies when a confrontation followed an air-horn incident. The charges are allegations and have not been tested in court.
In Durham Region, a forty-three-year-old Kingston woman was killed when three vehicles collided on Highway four-oh-one near Thickson Road in Whitby and two vehicles caught fire. Ontario Provincial Police charged a twenty-year-old Lincoln man with dangerous and impaired driving causing death. Those charges also remain before the courts.
And the Toronto Raptors rallied from fourteen points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Los Angeles Clippers one hundred and twenty-five to one hundred and eighteen. Kawhi Leonard remained out with left-knee swelling. Toronto has confirmed treatment and re-evaluation, but not a return date. A reported three-to-four-week absence comes from Chris Haynes and is not a team-confirmed timetable.
For The Northern Current, I’m Lucy. Have a good morning.
