Good morning. I'm Lucy with The Northern Current for Friday, October twenty-third.

Canada and Türkiye have launched a strategic partnership after Prime Minister Mark Carney met President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara. Their governments opened a first round of free-trade negotiations and signed an expanded air-transport agreement. The three-year plan also covers energy, defence and security. These are new commitments and negotiations, not completed trade gains.

In the West Bank, Israeli authorities ordered closures after a shooting attack. The Associated Press reports at least five people were injured and two alleged gunmen were killed. Casualty figures and the duration of the closures remain subject to updates.

Ontario says it plans to introduce legislation to accelerate the remaining four-laning of Highway sixty-nine between Parry Sound and Sudbury. The province says sixty-eight kilometres remain. Its claim that the timeline could be shortened by five years is an estimate, not a completed result.

In Hamilton, today is the final scheduled day for the all-ward ballot-on-demand poll at City Hall, from nine until four. The city had counted thirty-four thousand, nine hundred ninety-six advance ballots by October twenty-first, already above its full twenty-twenty-two advance total. Election day is Monday.

In sports, the Tampa Bay Rays visit the Milwaukee Brewers for Game One of the World Series tonight at eight Eastern. Confirmed starters and final roster changes should be checked later today.

For the weekend watch list, the Associated Press highlights the live-action Moana on Disney Plus, The Invite on HBO Max, and new seasons of Lupin and The Terminal List. Canadian catalogue availability should be confirmed before viewing.

And oil is trading around one hundred ten dollars a barrel as Middle East risks stay elevated. That market price does not by itself predict Canadian prices at the pump.

We'll scan again at eight, eleven, one-thirty and three-thirty Toronto time.
