Local officials warned that damaged homes could collapse in aftershocks, Reuters reported.

Thursday night’s earthquake

State news agency Xinhua’s earlier rescue update said the magnitude-seven earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu City at 10:33 p.m. on October 22, local time.

That report described rescue and medical efforts in a high-altitude area facing cold temperatures, alongside work to shelter displaced residents and restore infrastructure.

The figures are attributed official counts; TNC has not independently verified them.
