Updated October 24: Added reported casualties and power-restoration figures after the storm battered Taiwan.
Typhoon Champi has left one person dead and more than 500 injured in Taiwan, AFP reported Saturday.
The agency reported that authorities evacuated more than 5,000 people ahead of the storm. Strong winds toppled trees and damaged electricity lines, while rain caused brief flooding.
About 56,000 households remained without electricity at the time of AFP’s report as emergency crews worked to restore service. That is a reported snapshot, rather than a live outage count.
AFP quoted Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration as warning that surrounding waters still faced strong winds and waves even after the storm’s most severe effects had passed.
