Ontario plans consultations starting late this year on optional digital identification, followed by a digital version of the Ontario Photo Card, CHCH reports.
The province’s October 23 announcement describes a development process. Digital health cards and driver’s licences are future possibilities, rather than credentials being launched now.
The government says it intends to introduce legislation in late 2027 to protect residents’ ability to obtain and use physical identification alone. That proposed protection has not been enacted through this announcement.
Ontario says consultations will help shape the credentials and examine potential cost savings. Residents are not being told to replace their physical cards.
