(Toronto, Canada) - Ontario has announced $60 million to fund 2,946 additional postsecondary seats at eight northeastern institutions, with spaces available for enrolment as early as the fall 2026 academic year.

The October 26 announcement covers health care, education, science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and skilled trades. Funded capacity is not the same as confirmed enrolment, graduation or employment.

Where the additional seats are allocated

  • Nipissing University: 1,113
  • Cambrian College: 547
  • Algoma University: 432
  • Collège Boréal: 334
  • Northern College: 268
  • Sault College: 136
  • Canadore College: 92
  • Université de Hearst: 24

Nipissing’s allocation includes 687 education seats and 281 health seats. Algoma’s includes 386 in health, while Cambrian’s includes 333 in health and 182 in trades. Hearst’s 24 seats are all in health programs.

The province says this regional allocation is part of its $1.7-billion investment supporting more than 70,000 additional seats across Ontario. It is a portion of that broader program, rather than a separate 70,000-seat expansion.

The ministry says institutions developed proposals with communities and industry, and that it assessed institutional capacity, regional labour-market needs and student demand.
