Good evening. I’m Lucy, with The Northern Current.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is rejecting American allegations of Canadian interference in next month’s U.S. midterm elections. Speaking in Istanbul today, Carney dismissed the accusations and expressed disappointment in the U.S. ambassador’s comments.

In Jordan, authorities say at least seven people were killed and dozens wounded when gunmen attacked a church funeral in Karak governorate. Reports on the number injured are still changing.

Here in Ontario, the province is moving toward optional digital identification. Consultations are expected to begin late this year, followed by testing of a digital Ontario Photo Card. Digital driver’s licences and health cards would come later. The government also plans legislation protecting access to physical identification.

In Hamilton today, Ottawa announced more than eight hundred and thirteen million dollars for research across Canada. The funding supports more than four hundred and fifty researchers, research infrastructure and institutional costs.

And Statistics Canada says retail sales rose one-point-two per cent in August, reaching seventy-four-point-six billion dollars.

A final local reminder: Hamilton’s municipal election is Monday, October twenty-sixth.
