HAMILTON — Northern Ontario youth brought concerns about development legislation to the Assembly of First Nations’ Hamilton climate gathering, TimminsToday reported October 18.

Katherine Jeremiah-Génier of Walking Forward Together joined Here We Stand and Okiniwak in discussing land, water and Indigenous rights, the report says.

A Hamilton event, not a new gathering today

The AFN’s official event page places its fourth National Climate Gathering at the Hamilton Convention Centre from October 5 to 8. The October 18 reporting describes that earlier event.

The organizer’s program included a youth gathering and sessions on First Nations-led climate action, stewardship and conservation, bringing together youth, Elders, leaders and environmental specialists.

Bill C-39 remains before Parliament

Parliament’s current record identifies Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, as being considered by a House of Commons committee. It passed second reading and was referred to committee on October 8; it has not completed the legislative process.

The government’s September 21 announcement says the proposal aims to speed federal project reviews while maintaining environmental standards and Indigenous rights. That is the government’s position, not a finding that resolves concerns about the bill.

The distinction matters: discussion of proposed changes is not evidence that every proposed measure is already law, nor that a specific development has been approved.
