Canada’s regional travel warning remains in place as Hurricane Trudy approaches Mexico’s west-central coast. WestJet is offering flexibility for some upcoming Puerto Vallarta bookings.

At 5 p.m. Toronto time on October 17, the National Hurricane Center reported 100 mph sustained winds about 180 kilometres south-southwest of Manzanillo. It forecast a close coastal pass overnight and Sunday, with possible additional strengthening.

A hurricane warning covered Manzanillo northward to Cabo Corrientes. The NHC also warned of dangerous surf, flooding and mudslides; hazards can extend beyond the forecast cone.

Canada’s warning is regional

Canada’s Mexico travel advice, last updated October 16 at 11:30 a.m. Eastern, advises against non-essential travel from north of Punta San Telmo to Cabo Corrientes because of Trudy. That storm-specific advice is not a blanket warning against all travel anywhere in Mexico.

Ottawa says the storm could disrupt transport, electricity, communications and other essential services. People in affected areas should monitor local warnings and follow Mexican authorities’ instructions, including evacuation orders.

WestJet’s advisory, posted October 15, covers travel to or from Puerto Vallarta on October 18 and 19. Flexible change and cancellation options apply to eligible guests, subject to the airline’s terms.

For flight-only bookings made directly with WestJet, the airline directs passengers to Manage Trips for a one-time change or cancellation. Package customers and people who booked through an agent or another seller should contact their original provider.

A flexibility policy does not mean every flight is cancelled or every booking qualifies for the same remedy. Check the current airline advisory and individual flight status before travelling to the airport.
