HAMILTON — City election staff have identified signs opposing Ward 8 council candidate Dawn Danko as unregistered third-party advertising, CHCH reported on Saturday, October 17.

The broadcaster cited an email from city officials to Danko's campaign, which supplied photographs of the material. CHCH says staff indicated the unregistered advertisements should be removed.

TNC has not reviewed the original correspondence or independently established who commissioned the signs. The CHCH report includes no advertiser response and does not announce a charge or court ruling.

Registration comes before paid advertising

Hamilton's published guidance says third-party advertisers must have their registration certified by the City Clerk before raising or spending campaign money or beginning advertising.

The rules cover paid material supporting or opposing a candidate or a ballot question. Advertisements must identify the registered advertiser, the municipality of registration and contact information. The registration period ends October 23; that deadline does not replace the requirement for certification before advertising begins.

The registration issue is separate from the accuracy of the political message. This article does not verify the signs' claims about taxes.

Voting continues

The City's certified list confirms Danko is running for Ward 8 councillor. Hamilton's final ward-wide advance polls run October 17–18, ahead of Election Day on October 26. Voters can check locations through the City's election website.
