Steel jobs in the political spotlight

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre visited Burlington’s LaSalle Park Marina on October 9, urging federal action over 500 planned layoffs at Stelco’s Hamilton plant. He called for Ottawa to sue owner Cleveland-Cliffs over employment commitments and presented a Conservative steel plan. These are opposition proposals; the immediate local issue is the uncertainty facing affected workers and their families.

A downtown rental-cooling pilot

Hamilton council has approved a Ward 2 pilot running from June 1, 2027 to September 15, 2028. It will require at least one habitable space in a rental unit to stay at or below 26°C during the summer requirement period. The City says exemptions will address situations where building or infrastructure limitations make compliance infeasible. Staff will assess the pilot’s costs, impacts and implementation before recommending any wider rollout.
