Hamilton has published heritage notices covering the Hamilton Club, the former Grace Anglican Church and two properties in Ancaster’s historic village core.

The October 22 notices describe two different stages of the process. Council passed designation by-laws for 6 Main Street East, the Hamilton Club, and 1401 King Street East, the former Grace Anglican Church, on September 9. Their publication today does not mean those votes occurred today.

Two Ancaster designations proposed

The city separately announced its intention to designate the former Gurnett General Store at 280 Wilson Street East and Ryerson United Church at 265 Wilson Street East. These are proposals, rather than notices that designation by-laws have passed.

The city describes the former store as a circa-1872 brick commercial building associated with the Gurnett family. It identifies the church’s original 1869 stone chapel and Gothic Revival features as part of its heritage value.

Different notices, different response routes

The published by-law notice describes an appeal process involving the Ontario Land Tribunal and municipal clerk. The proposed-designation notices describe written objections to the clerk. Each specifies a 30-day period following publication; readers should consult the exact notice for its requirements.

The Ancaster pages are published October 22 but their notice text is dated October 21. No final calendar deadline is calculated here.
