TORONTO — Citytv will launch Dateline Canada on November 26, marking the first international expansion of NBC’s long-running newsmagazine franchise.

Veteran investigative journalist Diana Swain will lead the Canadian edition. The two-hour premiere is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET/PT on Citytv and Citytv+.

Premiere revisits Elizabeth Bain disappearance

The first special will examine the unresolved 1990 disappearance of University of Toronto student Elizabeth Bain from Scarborough.

Rogers Studios says the program reviewed decades of police files and will explore the wrongful conviction of Bain’s former boyfriend, Robert Baltovich, subsequent examinations of the evidence and previously unreported information. Baltovich’s second-degree murder conviction was overturned, and prosecutors ultimately did not proceed with another trial.

The existence of a new television investigation does not establish what happened to Bain. Her disappearance remains unsolved, and the program’s claims about previously unreported material have not yet been independently tested in public.

Swain leads first international edition

Swain spent 33 years at CBC, including work as an executive producer of The Fifth Estate and as managing editor of investigative journalism, before leaving the public broadcaster in 2024.

Catherine Legge and Claire Adams are executive producers for Rogers Studios. The format is licensed by NBCUniversal Formats, a division of Universal Studio Group.
