(Ottawa, Canada) - The federal government has proposed changes to the Clean Fuel Regulations intended to support Canadian low-carbon fuel producers, with a 75-day public consultation planned after publication in the Canada Gazette on October 30.
Environment and Climate Change Canada announced the proposal October 27. The changes are proposed amendments, rather than newly enacted requirements.
The department says its approach aims to improve domestic producers’ competitiveness, encourage investment and simplify compliance. It points to carbon capture at ethanol facilities and processing renewable feedstocks, such as canola oil, alongside crude oil as examples of projects it wants to support.
Those are the government’s intended benefits, rather than outcomes established by Tuesday’s announcement. The release does not establish a new retail gasoline price or a guaranteed reduction in drivers’ fuel bills.
A separate, existing Biofuels Production Incentive offers up to $372 million in production-based support for domestic biodiesel and renewable diesel producers, with intake open until December 2027, the department says.
