(York Region, Canada) – York Regional Police launched Project Fallback on October 30, asking residents to tighten home security as earlier darkness creates opportunities for break-ins.
Police say break-ins often happen between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., and November and December have the region's highest monthly totals.
The release lists 1,511 incidents in 2023, 1,480 in 2024 and 1,469 in 2025. The 2026 figure is 786 to date, a partial-year total that should not be treated as a full-year comparison.
The campaign combines prevention with timely reports of suspicious activity. Residents are urged to lock doors, windows and vehicles, check alarms, and use lighting and cameras.
Police also recommend removing valuables, spare keys and garage-door openers from vehicles, collecting mail and packages, and keeping entrances clear of overgrown vegetation.
York Regional Police's non-emergency number is 1-866-876-5423. Emergencies should be reported to 911.
