HAMILTON — Two men have been charged after a 62-year-old woman was injured and her vehicle stolen at a shopping plaza on Monday morning, Hamilton police say.

Officers were called to 86 Mall Road at about 8:38 a.m. on September 28. According to police, the woman was taking items from her vehicle when two men approached her. One grabbed her purse and demanded her keys. Police allege she was put in a headlock and thrown to the ground before the men drove away in her vehicle.

The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Police used the vehicle’s GPS tracking system to locate it at a King Street gas station about 15 minutes later. As officers approached, the driver fled and struck a marked police cruiser, police say. The passenger ran from the scene and was arrested after a short foot pursuit.

Officers later found the vehicle abandoned near Belmont Avenue and arrested the second man nearby.

Police identified the accused as Abdulrahman Ali, 21, and Hussain Yahya Jawad, 23, both of Hamilton. Both were held for bail hearings. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Investigators are asking anyone with information, surveillance video or dashcam footage to email CID30@hamiltonpolice.ca. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
