DELTA, BRITISH COLUMBIA — A third person has died from injuries suffered when a vehicle struck four pedestrians outside Tsawwassen Mills on September 30, Delta police said Wednesday.
Police identified the latest victim as 64-year-old Gwenyth Brigit Dwyn of South Delta. Another person who was hospitalized after the collision has been released and is continuing to recover at home.
Crash killed two Tsawwassen First Nation Elders at scene
The collision happened at approximately 10:25 a.m. on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Two Tsawwassen First Nation Elders died at the scene, and the two other pedestrians were taken to hospital in critical condition.
The area where the collision occurred had been scheduled to host a House Post unveiling after a Truth and Reconciliation walk elsewhere on the property. Police have repeatedly said the collision was not connected to the walk and that investigators have found no evidence it was targeted or ideologically motivated.
Cause remains under investigation
Investigators say the vehicle involved in the fatal crash had also been involved in an earlier collision. Police have not reached a final conclusion about the cause and are still examining whether the driver experienced a medical event beforehand.
The driver received medical attention, was interviewed and was released from hospital. No charges had been sworn in the previous police update.
Delta police say collision analysis has been completed but officers continue to review witness accounts, cellphone recordings and other video. Anyone with relevant information who has not spoken to investigators is asked to contact police and reference file 26-18401.
