MANITOBA — The trail and viewing areas at Sturgeon Falls in Whiteshell Provincial Park reopened October 2 after the province completed new safety measures.

The site had been closed since July, when two children drowned near the falls. Manitoba announced the completed work in a Friday news release.

What changed

The upgrades include fenced viewing areas intended to keep visitors away from hazardous slippery rocks, new signs warning against swimming and identifying strong currents, and a new portage giving canoeists and kayakers access to safer shoreline areas.

The province says feedback from families, community members and local businesses informed the work. The improvements reduce access to known hazards, but visitors must still follow posted warnings around fast-moving water.

The reopening is the new development. Earlier provincial notices described the planned measures; the October 2 announcement confirms the trail and viewing areas are open again.
