(St. Catharines, Canada) – St. Catharines has sent provincial officials new survey findings on summer flood damage and insurance difficulties as it continues seeking disaster assistance for residents.

In a November 2 release, the city said its intake survey identified 1,250 separate properties. Within those responses, 34 properties reported overland flooding and damage alongside either a rejected insurance claim or no coverage. Another 209 reported overland damage with their insurance claims still unresolved or uncertain.

The 1,250 figure represents properties identified through the survey; it is not a finding that every one had uninsured overland damage. The city said its intake also collected information about sewer backups and other damage.

Officials said they shared the findings to support provincial consideration of potential help through Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians. The announcement does not establish that the program has been activated or that payments have been approved.

The province decides activation and eligibility. The city’s September notice also distinguished its information-gathering form from a program application: submitting information did not guarantee assistance.
