(Orillia, Canada) – Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is examining how a 65-year-old man suffered a serious, non-life-threatening injury during a police apprehension in Orillia on October 30.
In an October 31 statement, the SIU said Ontario Provincial Police officers went to a West Street North home at about 1 p.m. for a wellness check involving the man.
Preliminary account under investigation
The watchdog’s preliminary information says the man barricaded himself inside. Officers later attempted to apprehend him, an interaction occurred, and an officer discharged an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield, which the SIU described as a less-lethal weapon.
The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital. An officer was also injured, treated at hospital and released, according to the SIU.
Those details are the SIU’s initial account, not completed findings. Its release announces an investigation; it does not announce a criminal charge or a finding that an officer acted unlawfully.
