OTTAWA — Conservative MP Scott Aitchison says he will resign his Parry Sound–Muskoka seat at the end of the current fall parliamentary sitting.

In a letter released to constituents Wednesday, Aitchison said he intends to explore other opportunities after 30 years of public life, The Canadian Press reports.

Aitchison sought the Conservative leadership in 2022 and has served as the party’s housing critic. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre thanked him for his service and wished him well.

The announcement sets out a future departure; Aitchison is not reported to have vacated the seat immediately. The report did not announce a date for a byelection.
