OTTAWA — A federal progress report identifying anti-Zionism as a contemporary manifestation of antisemitism has opened a debate over protecting Jewish Canadians and political expression, The Canadian Press reports.

Public Safety Canada published the report September 24. Wednesday’s coverage examines reactions to its language.

Different interpretations

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs supports the shift, arguing that hostility toward Israel can fuel threats against Jewish communities. Liberal MP Anthony Housefather also welcomed the government’s recognition.

Independent Jewish Voices opposes the wording, warning that it could suppress speech. The Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council argues that opposition to a political ideology should remain distinguishable from discrimination against Jewish people.

The dispute also reflects differing definitions of Zionism and anti-Zionism among the organizations involved.

The reported development is language in a federal policy document. The coverage does not announce a new criminal prohibition on criticism of Israel.
