(Toronto, Canada) – Ontario will swear in elected trustees at supervised school boards while appointed supervisors retain control, CityNews reported October 30.
Education Minister Paul Calandra said ceremonies should be arranged by November 15. The change reverses an earlier position delaying the oaths.
CityNews said eight boards are supervised, including Toronto’s public and Catholic boards. Swearing in trustees would not restore their governing powers under the announced approach.
Calandra linked the change to conduct rules after trustees discussed community gatherings, warning of investigations into potential violations. TDSB trustee Alexis Dawson said elected members can still engage constituents and attend community events. No misconduct finding was reported.
The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association lists November 15 as the start of the new term and describes the usual declaration-of-office process at an inaugural meeting within seven days of that date. Its general calendar is separate from the arrangements announced for supervised boards.
The announcement concerns planned oaths, not completed ceremonies or an end to supervision.
