CHICAGO — Mike Ditka, the Hall of Fame tight end who later coached the Chicago Bears to the franchise’s only Super Bowl championship, has died at 86.
Ditka’s family announced his death Friday. The family did not immediately disclose a cause.
A player who reshaped the tight end position
The Bears selected Ditka fifth overall in the 1961 NFL draft. He earned rookie-of-the-year honours and made the Pro Bowl in each of his first five seasons, helping Chicago win the 1963 NFL championship.
Ditka later played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. He caught a touchdown pass in Dallas’s Super Bowl VI victory and then spent nine seasons as a Cowboys assistant coach.
His combination of blocking and receiving helped redefine what NFL teams expected from tight ends. In 1988, Ditka became the first player at the position inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The 1985 Bears
Ditka returned to Chicago as head coach in 1982. His Bears won five consecutive NFC Central titles from 1984 through 1988, but the 1985 team became the defining chapter of his coaching career.
Powered by one of the league’s most dominant defences, Chicago finished 15-1 and defeated the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX. It remains the Bears’ only Super Bowl championship.
Ditka coached the Bears through 1992 and later led the New Orleans Saints from 1997 to 1999. He was one of the rare figures to win NFL championships as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
A lasting Chicago identity
Known for an intense sideline presence and blunt public persona, Ditka became closely identified with the city and its football culture. The Bears retired his No. 89 in 2013.
His image also crossed into popular culture, most famously through the recurring “Da Bears” sketches on Saturday Night Live. After coaching, he worked in television and supported retired players through charitable and advocacy efforts.
