Hamilton-born actor Luke Kirby joins the fourth season of Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent as Det.-Sgt. John Darcy, forming a new partnership with Kathleen Munroe’s Frankie Bateman.
The Canadian Press reports that David Cronenberg also guest stars in the season’s second episode. He plays a psychiatrist who assists the detectives and is revealed to be Bateman’s father.
A new partnership for the Toronto drama
Kirby’s Darcy replaces Aden Young’s Henry Graff. Young returned to Australia after his three-season contract, according to the report.
Kirby prepared for the Toronto setting by watching Cronenberg’s Videodrome and Crash, before learning the filmmaker would appear in the show.
The episode centres on a fictional investigation involving human remains discovered at a mail facility. The series uses Toronto crime headlines as inspiration, reworking them into dramatic cases.
For viewers, the cast changes bring both a new detective dynamic and a guest appearance by one of Canada’s most recognizable filmmakers.
