HAMILTON — Local union members and supporters rallied outside Hamilton Centre MP Aslam Rana’s constituency office on Friday evening, according to CHCH’s October 2 report.

The Hamilton and District Labour Council and affiliated unions called for Bill C-39 to be stopped and Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to be repealed. CHCH reported dozens of participants.

Labour council president Anthony Marco told the broadcaster that organizers object to federal intervention ending strikes. United Steelworkers Local 7135 president Frank Crowder also participated, linking the concerns to workers currently on strike at National Steel Car.

Those arguments represent the organizers’ position. Crowder’s concern that federal measures could influence provincial action is a prediction, not an announced Ontario back-to-work order.

Organizers told CHCH they intend to rally at other Liberal MPs’ offices in coming weeks. The report does not include a response from Rana.

The rally is a new local event, distinct from TNC’s earlier coverage of the labour federation’s objections to the bill.
