HAMILTON — Residents are invited to a free gathering at West Harbour’s James Street Plaza today as Hamilton observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The city’s published schedule lists a community event from 10 a.m. to noon at James Street North and Guise Street East. All ages are welcome.
Planned participants include Gimaa Stacey LaForme, Spirit Vision Drum & Dancers, poet January Rogers and keynote speaker and author Dr. Karen Hill. The program also lists greetings from Councillor Cameron Kroetsch and Mayor Andrea Horwath.
A sunrise ceremony was scheduled for 7 a.m. The Northern Current has not independently confirmed attendance or what took place at that earlier ceremony.
The city describes the day as an opportunity for reflection, learning and healing, acknowledging the lasting effects of residential schools and honouring Survivors and children who never returned home.
