HAMILTON / TORONTO — Travellers heading toward Toronto this weekend face two separate disruptions: planned Lakeshore West rail construction and road restrictions for the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon. A familiar train-and-streetcar journey may need a different connection.
The rail gap affects Hamilton-area journeys
GO Transit’s current notice says trains will not operate between Aldershot and Oakville on October 17–18. Rail service remains on the Niagara Falls–Aldershot and Oakville–Union sections.
Regular trips originating or terminating at Confederation and West Harbour are cancelled. That does not mean every train through West Harbour is cancelled: GO’s guidance still identifies a Niagara Falls train connection there.
Replacement buses connect West Harbour/Aldershot with Oakville. The Metrolinx release carried by BurlingtonToday lists Burlington as a bus stop, but not Appleby or Bronte. At those two stations, regular early-morning and late-evening buses remain; there is no daytime GO service.
Monday, October 19 train times may shift by up to five minutes. Check the current construction notice and trip planner for the exact journey.
Race restrictions start before the runners
The five-kilometre event is Saturday, October 17; the marathon and half marathon follow Sunday, October 18. Toronto police’s October 16 notice says finish-area restrictions began Friday and are scheduled to remain until Sunday at 9 p.m.
Saturday’s Bay Street restriction between Front and Queen starts at 4 a.m. Further Bay Street and Lake Shore Boulevard West closures begin at 8 a.m., with reopening scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday brings wider staged closures across downtown and the waterfront.
Those are selected restrictions, not a complete road-access guide. Consult the police list and the organizer’s interactive closure map before driving; individual streets have different access and reopening arrangements.
TTC: no planned subway closure, but Sunday starts at 8
The TTC’s October 15 advisory says there are no scheduled subway closures for race weekend. Several surface routes divert, however, including Saturday adjustments between 4 a.m. and 1 p.m.
On Sunday, subway service begins at 8 a.m. The TTC points early travellers toward overnight bus connections, including 300 Bloor-Danforth and 320 Yonge. The 511 Bathurst streetcar starts at 11:30 a.m. because of road closures.
Use the current TTC advisory rather than assuming a normal surface route or an earlier Sunday subway. The construction and race closures are separate events.
