HAMILTON — Hamilton’s Nigerian community gathered at City Hall on Thursday, October 1, 2026, to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence Day.

Mayor Andrea Horwath addressed the crowd, while Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen joined attendees for photographs, wearing a green-and-white Nigerian baseball cap.

Nigeria’s Independence Day at Hamilton City Hall

The Nigerian Canadian Association of Hamilton advertised the gathering for 11 a.m. to noon at the City Hall forecourt, 71 Main Street West. Nigeria’s High Commission in Ottawa also shared the community invitation.

October 1 marks Nigeria’s independence in 1960. This year’s anniversary celebrates 66 years of independence.

The Northern Current wishes Hamilton’s Nigerian community, and Nigerians celebrating around the world, a happy Independence Day.
