(Guelph, Canada) – Guelph police are warning of an increase in bank-fraud calls targeting seniors, with scammers arranging doorstep pickups of debit and credit cards.

In an October 29 bulletin, police said callers pose as bank or credit-bureau representatives and claim suspicious activity has been detected. They ask for card details and PINs, then say someone will collect the cards for replacement.

A matching name and code are part of the scam

The caller supplies a name and verification code. Someone then arrives at the door using those details, sometimes while the target remains on the phone, and takes the cards.

Police say the cards are subsequently used to make purchases worth thousands of dollars.

Verify through a trusted number

Anyone receiving such a call should hang up and contact their bank using a telephone number they trust, police advise. The service also asks residents to discuss the scam with older relatives and friends.
