Ottawa announced more than C$813 million for Canadian research on October 23, with Parliamentary Secretary Karim Bardeesy making the announcement in Hamilton.

The federal release says the funding supports more than 450 researchers, infrastructure and the indirect costs of running research institutions. These are national allocations spanning several programs and award cycles.

The package includes C$120 million for five New Frontiers in Research Fund teams and more than C$369 million in Research Support Fund grants for 161 institutions. Additional streams provide nearly C$104 million for institutional projects and nearly C$25 million for research security.

More than C$187 million supports 220 new and renewed Canada Research Chairs. Nearly C$8 million through the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund supports equipment and infrastructure for 35 projects at 22 institutions.

The announcement identifies fields including clean energy, regenerative medicine and machine learning. It describes funding commitments and research aims; outcomes will depend on the work that follows.
