BELLEVILLE, ONT. — Police are investigating antisemitic flyers distributed in Belleville’s east end, including material found at the Sons of Jacob synagogue, according to police and an October 2 Canadian Press report.
Belleville Police said October 1 that officers were seeking information and video evidence. The service increased patrols around places of worship and other community gathering spaces.
Synagogue president Norman Weddum told The Canadian Press that four different flyers appeared overnight into Thursday and were distributed at the synagogue and through the surrounding area.
A community already recovering
The discovery came less than two weeks after the September 20 shooting outside the synagogue during Yom Kippur. Police have described that earlier attack as hate-motivated and said officers prevented a potential mass killing. No one inside the building was hurt; a police officer was seriously wounded.
The flyer investigation is a separate development. Police have not announced charges or identified who distributed the material, and responsibility should not be inferred before evidence is established.
Anyone with information or video evidence can contact Belleville Police through the address listed in its public notice.
