HAMILTON — Arizona State University has placed hockey coach Greg Powers on paid administrative leave following the hospitalization of Stoney Creek native Matthew Mayich, CHCH reported Wednesday.

Assistant coach Mike Corbett will lead the team as its season begins this weekend, with an interim head coach to be named. Athletics director Graham Rossini said the decision followed deliberation and was intended to provide stability while supporting Mayich, his family and the players.

Mayich, 21, collapsed during an outdoor workout on August 20. His family’s attorney, Rob Carey, has described his condition as exertional heat stroke that deprived his brain of oxygen. Those medical details are attributed to the family’s representative.

Questions about the workout

The university’s September 21 account places the workout at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe between approximately 7 and 8:30 a.m. It reports temperatures of 86 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit and says the activities included running, pushups and planks.

ASU said campus police are investigating and will provide their completed report to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for independent review. Its administrative review is separate from that process.

Seven players have challenged the university’s account and sought an independent investigation, according to CHCH. The leave announcement is a new development in that continuing scrutiny; it does not establish responsibility for Mayich’s injuries.
